The goal of the organic school garden is to help spread a true education on organic culture, environmental culture and healthy nutrition at school among the younger generations.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Education for sustainable development requires dealing with a topic that is of crucial importance: the problem of natural resources and their sustainable use. The Organic School Garden is an area for the cultivation of fruits and/or vegetables which is located inside the school area or very close to it. It is an educational experience that aims to bring the schools close to the knowledge of the agricultural world through gardening. The experience of cultivating a small plot in the school also represents a resource to support academic development. Finally, the school gardens are a powerful tool to improve the nutrition quality and as a means of knowledge for the children and their families.
It is not necessary to use a large area for the cultivation of a great variety of plants and vegetables, although it is crucial to use biological methods for improving the ground quality and allow crop diversity.
WHO IS IT AIMED AT?
The project Organic Gardens for the Schools of Altea is aimed at teachers and students from the municipality’s schools who are interested in participating. They will be provided with a plot and the necessary gardening tools. With this project, the town council of Altea invites all the schools in the municipality to create their own middle size gardens, easily workable for the students, teachers and parents. The production methods must be simple, so that the children can easily learn them and even repeat them at their own homes.
